I had an Acer, casing was cheap as hell and fell to bits, but it continued to function for years.

ASUS is a great brand, use them for my pc parts (mobo, gfx card etc)

They're two different brands...
I had an Acer desktop. It was fine, but desktops are desktops. If the components are similar, the brand doesn't really matter.
I have some Asus stuff - a router, audio card, and monitor, and all are great for the money.
I've never owned a laptop, so, I can't really say. I'd guess that either are as good as Toshiba, HP, etc.

My work computer this summer was a lower tier Asus laptop. Wasn't the most solidly built thing in the world, but it did web browsing, spreadsheets, powerpoint and the like just fine. I think as long as you took care of it and didn't expect screaming performance it would be fine. Don't know anything about their higher spec models though, if that's what you're looking into.

I have an Acer Chromebook. Feels flimsy and fragile, but its light and so far I haven't broken it, and everything except for one of the rubber feet that fell off is as good as it was when I got it last March.

I had an Acer and it lasted a couple years and then the mobo died, I think. Apparently it was a common problem for them. There was even a class action lawsuit or something. The battery was awful. Wouldn't hold a charge for more than a few minutes towards the end. That may have been my fault though because I left it plugged in all the time and I've since learned that's bad for laptop batteries.
I replaced it with a MB air. Love it but I want to get some sort of windows machine for more dedicated gaming. The air handles a good bit of what I throw at it but a lot of games are still windows only and the graphics are limited too.
EDIT: I had an Acer, not asus

I made an edit to my post after you recommended it. Just an FYI.

Two different companies. Asus makes great stuff. Acer makes cheap okay stuff. There's nothing wrong with Acer. I think that they make a pretty good product for the price, but if I were choosing between an Acer and an Asus, it would be Asus all the way. My computer's guts is Asus, but I have a cheap set of Acer monitors because they look fine for my needs and were cheap. They haven't failed me yet, and I've had them for like four years. They get pretty much constant use.

First laptop was an Acer, lasted about 4 years. Second was an Asus, didn't even last two.
Now I'm on a Toshiba that's been in the family for about 5 years now and is still in great working condition.

I bought a 16" Asus gaming laptop six years ago and still use it occasionally. My only complaint with its quality is that the hinge broke two years in, needing an expensive replacement. I just recently replaced it with a much much more compact 11.6" Acer netbook, which, for the few months I've owned it, has proved to be pretty darn solid .

Did this research a couple years back for the niece's graduation - at least then, Sony made the best PC and Apple made the best MacBook. We got her a MacBook. It still works. Acer I see a lot in offices where there are hundreds of computers. Don't know what that means.

Which gen MBA do you have because I've had two and they were both pretty decent at gaming for thin and light laptops. My core2 duo MBA was only for for OSX games like Diablo 3 while the Haswell one I installed Windows 8.1 on it and played BF4 on it.
There are better gaming laptops but most of them are much heavier and have terrible battery life.

I have an Asus Bamboo windows 7 laptop. It's fairly well built, though I dislike the keyboard. It's for sale if you are looking for used. I haven't had the chance to restore it yet. It is also Windows 8 capable.
Acer is rather cheap unless you get the super expensive stuff.
Asus makes pretty good stuff.

It's a couple years old now. I got it just before the last big cat update (I think). Never upgraded to mavericks and kinda afraid to upgrade to Yosemite.
It has the intel hd 4000 graphics. I really like it. Down side is not enough space. It's my only computer currently so it gets stuffed with all my pictures and videos and whatnot until I go through the trouble of putting them on an external.

I wouldn't buy Acer seeing as they also make emachines and I'm not in love with Asus as a laptop manufacturer (love their motherboards though.) My preference for a windows laptop would be HP or Dell but I don't really care for Windows laptops much.
I'd rather go supercheap with a haswell chromebook (Wife has the HP 14 inch one and it's her favorite laptop and I like it for what it is) or invest more up front for a macbook air. On top of being what I consider the best constructed laptop they hold their value better than anything.
Think of Apple products as the Toyotas of the computer world, even if you don't like them you can't deny the resale value. Alternatively consider 2 year old windows laptops the equivalent of a 5 year old Maserati in resale value.

I have a few years old ASUS G73S, it's a beast. It runs FEA/CFD pretty well, gaming is great, a bit pricey but it's great.

I've got a low end Asus, it's not a gaming rig by any measure ,but it is fine for lite programming, business applications and web browsing, online videos etc. and I like it much more than the HP and Toshiba that it is replacing.

Yeah, my second one was the one after yours and it was the first one where the GPU was better than the discreet Nvidia GPU in my first MBA. Upgrade to any newer MBA and you'd see a big jump in gaming. As for storage, I bought a portable 7200 rpm usb3 hdd for media and only put applications on the ssd.

I really need to do that. I started to but I'm always afraid of deleting pictures with them on only one drive.

Put'em in the cloud. I keep all my photos on google+ and default all to private.

I have an Acer ultrabook, it's okish. Really depends on which laptop you're looking at getting.
